Series Review: Z Nation

From the popular Syfy channel and by the creators of the hilariously infamous Sharknado franchise comes an interesting take on the ZOMBIE SERIES trend. Yes, like most things The Asylum does, this is a series similar to The Walking Dead on amc. However, despite being a seeming ripoff, viewers should have mercy and actually try it out because it is surprisingly unique and is even a bit innovative in the genre.

The Premise

It is the end of the world as we know it and society has collapsed. The government as we know it ceases to exist. However, remnants of it are trying to find a cure. They actually succeed in this feat as they inject an experimental drug in a prisoner named Murphy. Thus, this man became the only immune human as he survives 8 zombie bites. His government escort encounters a group of survivors and swiftly perishes due to a zombie baby. Hence, the group of survivors take it upon their own responsibility to carry Murphy across America to a CDC camp in hopes of synthesising a zombie vaccine. However, Murphy may have plans of his own especially since he is turning into a zombie but a sentient one.

The Plot

The plot can be extremely weak at times but that is not really the purpose of the show. The purpose of the show seems to be to explore the possibilities of stories that could come about in a zombie apocalypse. Whether it is zombie babies, alien zombie or even zombie weed, this show constantly provides interesting scenarios for the group of survivors to , well, survive. In fact, this show is almost as brutal as Game of Thrones when it comes to the mortality rate of the characters (unless they are 3 of the main characters).

The Humour

Imagine Zombie Land style survival and Plants vs Zombies variety in zombie types and you have got the show in a nutshell. With such randomness alongside the extremely snarky Murphy, this show can have some really funny scenes.

The Characters

Murphy is my personal favourite since he is so hateable yet lovable. He is extremely self centered, snarky, cynical and mean. Yet, he is somehow sympathetic towards the end of the second season. He grows as a character but he still keeps to his roots. He is a bad person and he loves it. (Despite being a protagonist). Another interesting character is 10k. He calls himself that as he wants to kill 10,000 zombies after he had to put his own father down. He is the silent badass of the group, using his sniper and slingshot to massacre as many zombies as he can. His all around coolness is what makes me think he is cool and I feel that he would make a good Hiccup of a live-action How to Train Your Dragon movie.

 TL;DR

If you like zombies but find The Walking Dead too serious for you, Z Nation may be the right choice for you. I would rate is a 7/10
